Dear
Federation Friends,
As
you are all aware, the most powerful earthquake in 40 years erupted under the
Indian Ocean
on
Dec. 26, 2004
. It caused giant, deadly waves
called tsunamis to crash ashore in nearly a dozen countries.
The latest reports of this tragic event place the death toll at over
100,000 people in at least 11 different countries.
Tens of thousands more remain missing.
As
clubwomen, volunteers and community leaders, I know that many of you have
already donated to the various relief efforts underway in
Asia
.
Although
the General Federation of Women’s Clubs has established specific disaster
relief funds in response to previous tragedies, the size and scope of this
event makes it very difficult to forward contributions to any one agency or
organization working in the region.
GFWC
members, clubs, districts and state federations are encouraged to give
generously to aid those suffering from this disaster.
Following is a list of organizations and agencies that are helping the
victims of the tsunami in
South Asia
. This list is not all inclusive
but is comprised of organizations with whom GFWC has an established
relationship or whom have received the very highest ratings for their work.
Please
remember to send donations directly to these organizations (not to GFWC HQ),
clearly designate it for Tsunami Relief, note that you are a GFWC club /
member and report your contributions in the Reaching Out Internationally
program.
